यहां शिवलिंग पर हर साल गिरती है बिजली

कुल्लू घाटी में एक ऐसा अद्बुत मंदिर है जहां हर वर्ष शिवलिंग पर आसमानी बिजली गिरती है और शिवलिंग खंड- खंड हो जाता है। इसके बाद मंदिर के पुजारी शिवलिंग को मक्खन के साथ जोड़ कर पहले वाली स्थिति में लाते हैं। शायद इसी कारण मंदिर का नाम बिजली महादेव पड़ा है। 

कुल्लू घाटी के लोग बताते हैं कि बहुत पहले यहां कुलान्त नामक दैत्य रहता था। दैत्य कुल्लू के पास की नागणधार से अजगर का रूप धारण कर मंडी की घोग्घरधार से होता हुआ लाहौल स्पीति से मथाण गांव आ गया। दैत्य रूपी अजगर कुण्डली मार कर ब्यास नदी के प्रवाह को रोक कर इस जगह को पानी में डुबोना चाहता था ताकि यहां रहने वाले सभी जीवजंतु पानी में डूब कर मर जाए। भगवान शिव कुलान्त के इस विचार से चिंतित हो गए। 
भगवान शिव ने बड़े जतन के बाद उस राक्षस रूपी अजगर को अपने विश्वास में लिया। शिव ने उसके कान में कहा कि तुम्हारी पूंछ में आग लग गई है। इतना सुनते ही जैसे ही कुलान्त पीछे मुड़ा, शिव ने उसके सिर पर त्रिशूल वार कर दिया। त्रिशूल के प्रहार से कुलान्त मारा गया और उसके मरते ही उसका शरीर एक विशाल पर्वत में बदल गया। 

कहते हैं कि कुलान्त दैत्य के मारने के बाद शिव ने इंद्र से कहा कि वे हर साल एक बार इस जगह पर बिजली गिराया करें। आकाशीय बिजली बिजली शिवलिंग पर गिरने के बारे में कहा जाता है कि भगवान शिव नहीं चाहते चाहते थे कि जब बिजली गिरे तो जन धन को इससे नुकसान पहुंचे। भोलेनाथ लोगों को बचाने के लिए इस बिजली को अपने ऊपर गिरवाते हैं। इसी वजह से भगवान शिव को यहां बिजली महादेव कहा जाता है।

Bijli Mahadev temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in Kullu district is unique. It is said that lightning hits temple breaking the Shivling into pieces. The priest of temple joins the Shivling with butter and it takes proper shape with a grace of god. This temple is located at an altitude of 2,460m, overlooks Parvati valley. Weather during day time is pleasant and nights are cold, windy and prone to thunderstorms.

Bijli Mahadev trek difficulty

Best time for trekking to Bijli Mahadev temple is day-time as the weather is pleasant and the road is not slippery. There can be minor injuries while trekking like bruises, knee or arm sprain, etc. So, carry first aid kit. The ridge along the temple is prone to lightning. Hence during thunderstorms, stay below tree-line, keep away from tall trees and avoid height ground.

The trek to temple starts from Kullu. The bridge over Beas is crossed after Ramshila Bazaar and the trek passes through forest of oak, pine and deodar. There are several trails that lead to the temple. Every village located on the slope of the mountain face has its own path up to the ridge. There is no danger of getting lost as there are many small hamlets on way for instructions about route and directions. A jeep road of twelve kilometres has been constructed to the temple. The road stops three kilometres short of the temple. The distance on foot to the temple is about ten kilometres.

The trek to Bijli Mahadev starts from Naggar (situated in Kullu) which is just 21 km from Manali. Then the trail takes you to Nashala village through beautiful deodar forests. After crossing Nashala village, you will reach Matikocchar through a well-built road. Then, walk gradually through Kais (Wildlife Sanctuary) that leads that leads towards the temple of Bijli Mahadev. Bijli Mahadev temple is a wooden temple with a small opening in the roof for the lightning to pass. The place is windy but beautiful. From temple to reach Puid village it takes one hour. Then you can ride back to Manali from Puid in a jeep.

Bijli Mahadev trek weather

As this place lies height, the weather is unpredictable. The best time to visit Bijli Mahadev is summer as the weather is pleasant and not very cold. During winters and rainy season, the weather is cold and the road becomes slippery which makes trekking difficult.
